New Seattle Fire Code re: BBQs/Grills On Balconies
Our Team attended a legal webinar today and learned the following (paraphrased):
- Seattle adopted the 2021 version of fire code which took effect 3/15/24 and enforcement starts 7/1/24. Section 3.1.4 discusses gas barbecues / open flame grill on balconies. To operate a bbq/grill you have to be 10’ away from anything combustible and/or have a sprinkler system in the area.
- You can ask your fire department to come do an assessment on whether your balcony+bbq set up meets code. If your balcony is combustible you can operate open flame bbqs/grills.
- Does not apply to electric bbqs (no open flame)
- Don’t change your gov docs/rules w/o consulting attorney
- May apply to other cities/counties in the near future
